How to combine meditation on loving-kindness, compassion, joy and impartiality – 4

If you meditation strays into biased attachement to only those who are dear to you, switch to the meditation on the impartiality, extending this love to all without discrimination, dear ones, strangers and enemies.

If, instead of being concerned equally with all beings, impartiality strays into a vague indifference to all and ceases to be interested in their fate, think of all those who suffer and to cultivate a sincere compassion.

If, as you continually think of the countless sufferings of others, you might be overcome by a feeling of powerlessness, even despair, and feel overwhelmed by the immensity of the task. When this happens, switch to rejoicing in all the qualities of people who benefit others and of all the positive deeds that are accomplished throughout the world.

In the event that this joy drift naive euphoria, go back to selfless love. And so on.

At the end of the session, understand that phenomena are impermanent, interdependent, and therefore devoid of the solid, autonomous existence that we usually attribute to them.

Finally, rest a few moments in the full awareness of the present moment, in a state of natural simplicity, in which the mind is not carried away by with discursive thoughts.

Before resuming the course your activities, conclude with wishes and aspirations that create a bridge between meditation and daily life. Sincerely dedicate the benefits of meditation to all beings, thinking : ‟May the positive energy generated not only by this meditation but all my actions, words and caring thoughts, past, present and future help alleviate the suffering of beings in the short and long term.”
